What age did you begin playing a musical instrument?
I started by playing piano at age 5 then trombone at age 9.  Started tuba at age 11.

Why did you choose the instrument you play?

I was recruited by my middle school band teacher to switch from trombone.

Who is your favorite composer, and favorite work? Why?

My favorite composer is probably Bruckner.  The ninth would be my favorite of his works.  I like that in his music the themes return often increasing in orchestration and accompaniment.  By the third restatement, the music usually comes to a “breakthrough” that leads to a fantastic climax.

How many years have you been performing with Symphony in C?
The 2007-2008 season will be my 7th years playing with the Symphony.

What’s your favorite part about playing in Symphony in C?

I enjoy playing the great repertoire, as well as discovering new works from less well-known composers.

Where do you aspire to be in ten years? And what do you plan to do?

I’d love to be playing full time in an orchestra.  However, in recent years I’ve discovered that I’m happiest when I get to do a bit of everything-teaching, chamber music, opera, and orchestra.

What are you currently listening to on your I-pod?
Most recently I’ve been listening to Ben Folds’ Songs for Silverman and Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.  I could probably also listen to the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds everyday and not get sick of it.

What other interests outside of music do you share, if any?

I like to brew my own beer, the hoppier the better.  I enjoy spending long hours outside on frigid days in January, watching meat cook in my smoker.  As an avid baseball fan, I actually enjoy watching the New York Yankees lose as much as I enjoy watching my team, the Orioles, win.  Unfortunately, neither happen enough...
